Antique 19th Century Ovoid Redware Pitcher; Primitive Country Folk Pottery

Sorry, this item has sold.

Here's a fabulous, decorated 19th Century, redware pottery pitcher in very good, well-preserved condition. It's bulbous in shape and was decorated with oxides and then coated in lead glaze. The base color is mustard yellow along hints of green here and there. The bottom and underside are not glazed and have a dry, grungy patina. This pitcher measures 9 1/2 inches tall, has a 4 inch base diameter, and an opening that measures 5 1/4 inches across, including the spout. It's widest point in the center is about 6 3/4 inches in diameter.

This piece was found in a cellar and had been hidden away there for generations. It's in excellent condition which is extraordinary because country pottery pieces like this were so heavily used, many did not survive. This is a beautiful example of mid-19th century redware that will certainly become an important addition to any collection.
