Antique Primitive Tin Betty Oil Lamp Filler Can; 19th Century, Hand Crafted, Early

$75.00

Here's an old, handmade, tin oil can that originally was used for filling early oil lamps. It dates back well into the 1800's and has a dry, old, grungy patina with just very slight surface rust on the bottom. It has a conical shape with a crude, reservoir-type opening along with a tiny pouring lip. Originally, it probably had a small, hinged cover. This can does still have its original soldered-on handle that's in very good shape. Overall, this piece stands 9 1/4 inches tall and the bottom has a 4 3/4-inch diameter. There are no dents, holes or loose/broken seams. This type of can was used to fill old Betty lamps (and others) with whale oil or leftover kitchen grease. It appears at some point in its history, this filling can was painted with a gold paint similar to that used on picture frames back in the day. That paint is probably what kept this piece from rusting away. It's just as we found it and hasn't been altered or cleaned. It still a bit dusty/dirty from having been hidden away in a barn for the last century or more. There's no sticky or smelly oil residue left on it. Well preserved and ready for display, this is a very scarce piece of tinware that will enhance any early lighting collection!
