Here's an authentic, 19th Century Spanish Betty Lamp in very nice condition! It was handmade out of tin and is complete with lift up cover, hanger, and handle tab. Lamps like this one burned whale oil or household grease and fat trimmings and first came to use in the 18th Century. They continued to be utilized up to when oil and kerosine lamps became popular. This lamp was found in France and was a Spanish made import. The reflector, the cover and the very bottom are embossed with: "IMPORTE ESPAGNE" meaning Spanish Import in French. Original soldering is visible in many places. Unlike many tin pieces of this era found today, this Betty Lamp has minimal rust. It still has ancient residue from being used more than a century and a half ago. It spent generations stored away and is still dusty and dirty. Not including its hanger, it stands 6 7/8 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide. Very well preserved, this is an excellent example of early lighting and is a museum quality piece!
