Here's an exceptionally nice, early staved bucket or box complete with cover in well-preserved condition! Made of pine, this piece has original overlapping chestnut finger bands with a matching cover of similar construction. It's just as we found it with a dry, untouched patina along with raised prominent graining throughout. We have not added anything to alter or enhance the surface. Between the banding are incised or punched crisscross decorations, giving this piece a drum-like appearance. The cover has faint, circular burned-in decorations. Solid, sturdy, and tight, there is no danger of it falling apart. It shows age and wear with a thin piece of the upper band, measuring 4" by 1/4" missing. It doesn't harm its structural integrity and looks to have been gone for a long time. There have been make-do repairs with some nails added at some point in its history. Nevertheless, this is a rare piece that isn't quite a firkin and resembles a pantry box but is taller, like a bucket. It never had a carrying handle and looks to have been meant to be placed on a table, county or such. Overall, it measures 9 3/4 inches tall with a bottom diameter of 8 1/2 inches. At the top, this container of sorts has a 7 1/2-inch diameter without the cover, while the cover itself measures 8 3/4 inches across. One of our best finds in quite some time, we are proud to offer it here for the first time!
