Here's a late 19th to early 20th century "Superior" Brand tin can with original Victorian style lithographed paper label still intact. As the colorful label indicates, this tin contained tomatoes and was packed by Sears & Nichols with facilities located in Chillicothe Ohio and Pentwater Michigan. Sears & Nichols was a late 19th, early 20th century food packing company that was in business during the Victorian era. The label features Victorian trade card art styling which includes a romantic female portrait, floral embellishments, ornate serif typography, and award medallions. Such can labels became less ornate from 1910 to 1915 which helps to likely date this tin to 1890 through 1910. The early food canning methods at this time included sealing the can with solder, which is the case with this tin. The top and bottom have a copper color finish with a hole in the centers; one still has the original solder intact. This can is in fair condition but is not very rusty. There are no strutural problems. The label shows age and wear; it has a vertical tear, but it still tightly attached to the can. Still dusty and dirty, we have not attempted to clean it. Old, untouched, and scarce, this approximately 125-year-old tomato can displays very nicely and looks great among other antiques and advertising.
