Antique Country Primitive Redware Pottery Pitcher; Speckled, Lead Glaze

$75.00

We are proud to be offering this beautiful 19th Century redware pitcher that's straight from an old country estate. This rugged piece of pottery is bulbous in shape and coated in lead glaze and colored with copper oxide, giving it a gorgeous, speckled green color with a hint of mustard yellow. Curiously, the interior glaze is different with a mostly unspeckled green coloring. The exterior glaze stops near the bottom and the underside isn't glazed at all which was probably done to help keep the kiln clean back when this piece was fired. The unglazed portions have an original, old, dry patina that is the result of use, wear, and the passage of time. This pitcher stands about 10 inches high, has a inch opening diameter (spout included) and a base that measures 4 inches in diameter. It's widest portion in the center is about 7 1/2 inches in diameter. A simple, utilitarian piece of pottery in its time, now it's a gorgeous example of folk art that has surprisingly stood up well against time. It isn't cracked and doesn't have any hairlines, just a few old, chips in the opening rim that have been worn smooth. Household pottery of this vintage usually have some damage but this piece's overall condition is very good. Thick walled and heavier than it looks, it is a quality 1800s redware pitcher that will look wonderful in a country kitchen or displayed with other antique pottery. Don't miss out on this nice item!
