Fresh to the market and offered here for the first time is this beautiful, 19th Century redware pitcher that's straight from an old country estate. This rugged piece of pottery is bulbous in shape and has a dry, textured surface and colored with copper oxide, giving it a gorgeous, speckled green color with a hint of mustard yellow. Curiously, the interior glaze is different with a mostly mustard coloring. The exterior glaze stops near the bottom and the underside isn't glazed at all, which was probably done to help keep the kiln clean back when this piece was fired. The unglazed portions have an original, old, dry patina that shows some wear and age but is remarkably clean and in good shape.
This pitcher stands about 8 3/4 inches high, has a 4 1/2-inch opening diameter (4 3/4" with spout included) and a base that measures 4 3/8 inches in diameter. It's widest portion in the center is about 7 inches in diameter. A simple, utilitarian piece of pottery in its time, now it's a gorgeous example of folk art that has surprisingly stood up well against time. It isn't cracked and doesn't have any hairlines, just some slight chipping around the bottom edge which is typical of old redware. The interior glaze is a bit pockmarked near the bottom from the heavy use this piece saw in its time. Household pottery of this vintage usually has some damage, but this piece's overall condition is excellent. Thick walled and heavier than it looks, it is a quality 1800s redware pitcher that will look wonderful in a country kitchen or displayed with other antique pottery. Don't miss out on this nice item!
