Antique Rusty Man with Duck! Vintage 1930s Marx Joe Penner & His Duck Goo Goo Tin Wind Up Walking Toy

Sorry, this item has sold.

Here's an unusual find! This is a rusty old windup toy featuring a man carrying a duck and basket! Believe it or not, this particular toy, when in excellent shape sells for around $500, sometime more. Given the condition of this one, many toy collectors would pass on it. However, its well worn appearance gives it a great look that decorators and primitive buyers will certainly appreciate! As for the details on it, this is a vintage 1930s "Joe Penner and His Duck Goo Goo" tin windup toy manufactured by Marx. Joe Penner was a well-known radio comedian and stage/movie star in the early-mid 1930s! His famous catch phrase was "Wanna buy a Duck?" He was featured in the 1934 musical film "College Rhythm".
It is constructed of tin and has Penner carrying his duck Goo Goo, as well as what was a basket of ducks that once read "Wanna buy a duck? Sincerely, Joe Penner". The toy has a fixed wind key on the left side, and when it was wound Penner would move his legs furiously, causing him walk around sporadically. The winding mechanism doesn't work anymore but to toy still has its original wheels and the legs can be moved. His hat is missing. It was once brightly colored but the rust gives this toy a whole new personality. This piece is structurally sound and not falling apart or otherwise deteriorating. Great to display among primitives, antiques, and rustic old stuff! Unusual and fabulous!
